Letters/Faxes/E-mail:

  • Address one issue (bill) per letter/fax/e-mail
  • Refer to the number of the bill, if known
  • Hand-written letters are acceptable if your handwriting is legible
  • Don't use form letters Include local articles on the issues
  • Don't mail brochures or flyers from national organizations
  • Be concise. One page is the best
  • Be polite and courteous even if you object to the bill
  • Be specific about your request to support or oppose the bill
  • Briefly educate the legislator about the issue and how the bill will either rectify a problem or create one
  • Ask the Senator or Delegate to support your position Write only one letter from each organization.
  • All other members or supporters writing letters should identify themselves as individuals.

  • Identify yourself by name and city or name, city and organization
  • Ask to speak to the senator or delegate.If the senator or delegate is not available, ask to speak with the legislative assistant and discuss your position with the assistant. (You will not be able to speak to the legislator or assistant when you use the 800 number.)
  • Be concise. Limit your remarks to 2 to 3 minutes unless your receive questions.
  • Be polite and courteous even if you object to the bill Refer to the bill by number, if known
  • Explain why the issue is important to you or your organization Ask that the senator or delegate support your position
  • Refer to the legislator as Senator (Last Name) or Delegate (Last Name)
  • Make only one call representing each organization. All other members or supporters writing letters should identify themselves as individuals.
