Through annual grants to VFHS Organizational Members, SpayVA helps communities provide affordable surgeries, operate mobile clinics, transport animals to veterinary providers, support community cat programs, and reach families who might otherwise have no access to care.

Access Is About More Than the Cost of Surgery
A 2024 survey of VFHS organizations found that communities face several overlapping barriers:

SpayVA grants give local organizations the flexibility to address the barriers affecting their own communities. Funding may subsidize surgeries directly, but it can also support transportation, mobile services, vouchers, targeted outreach, and partnerships with veterinary providers.
Member organizations also estimate that approximately 95% of the animals entering their shelters or foster programs are unaltered and require surgery before or after placement.
WHAT SPAY VA GRANTS MAKE POSSIBLE
Affordable Care for Owned Pets
Grant funding helps reduce or eliminate the cost of surgery for families facing financial hardship. These programs allow more pets to receive preventive veterinary care while remaining with the people who love them.
Healthier Community Cat Populations
SpayVA supports targeted Trap-Neuter-Return and Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return programs that stabilize colonies, prevent future litters, improve feline health, and reduce pressure on local shelters.
Greater Capacity for Shelters and Rescues
Funding helps organizations prepare animals for adoption or transfer. It also allows receiving rescues to accept animals from shelters that may not have the resources to provide surgery before placement.
Access in Underserved Communities
Member organizations use grants to provide transportation, purchase surgery vouchers, operate mobile clinics, partner with private veterinarians, and bring services directly into communities where affordable care is otherwise unavailable.
MORE THAN TWO DECADES OF STATEWIDE PREVENTION
SpayVA was launched in 2001 to bring shelters, rescue groups, local governments, and veterinarians together around one shared goal: making spay/neuter care more accessible throughout Virginia.
The program initially helped establish regional high-volume clinics in Bristol, Harrisonburg, and Lynchburg. As those clinics became independent organizations, SpayVA expanded its role as a statewide funder of locally designed programs.
In 2014, SpayVA awarded $13,500 to 17 organizations, supporting 399 reported surgeries.
In 2026, SpayVA made its largest confirmed round of awards to date: $145,000 distributed among 67 VFHS member organizations.
Annual grant funding has grown more than tenfold since 2014, reflecting both the strength of Virginia’s animal welfare network and the continuing need for affordable veterinary care.
APPLY FOR A SPAY VA GRANT
SpayVA grants are available to current VFHS Organizational Members in good standing.
Eligible organizations must operate an established spay/neuter program or be prepared to launch a program during the grant year. Funding may support programs serving:

Populations facing significant barriers to care

Targeted initiatives for animals disproportionately represented in shelters

Transportation, mobile services, vouchers, or veterinary partnerships
Applications are accepted during the annual grant cycle, and awards are announced in connection with the VFHS Annual Conference. Recipients are required to report how funds were used and provide animal outcomes, photographs, and program stories.

In 2026, SpayVA applicants requested more than four times the amount available to award. A donation today helps VFHS fund more of those requests and gives member organizations the resources to act before an unwanted litter becomes a future shelter intake.
